PLANNING FOR THE WORST
Every year the lives of approximately 1.25 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. These people occupy 30 to 70 percent of orthopaedic beds in hospitals. In 2015 there were 140,086 personal-injury road traffic accidents reported to the police.
These statistics make road traffic accidents the leading cause of death by injury and the tenth-leading cause of all deaths globally. They now make up a surprisingly significant portion of the worldwide burden of ill-health.
If present trends continue, road traffic injuries are predicted to be the third-leading contributor to the global burden of disease and injury by 2020.
According to RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) “inappropriate speed contributes to around ten per cent of all injury collisions reported to the police, 13 per cent of crashes resulting in a serious injury and 24 per cent of collisions which result in death”.
Have you considered what would happen to your family and how they would managed the finances if you were injured or in hospital, even temporarily?
Hundreds of thousands of people will come to rely on relatives or carers to help manage their finances in the next 12 months because of illness or an accident. But most families are unprepared for such an outcome.
One vital document gives family members authority to handle the financial affairs of a loved one in need – meaning they can stay on top of household bills. It is known as a lasting power of attorney. But 44 million people do not have one – 85 per cent of the UK adult population. And two-fifths of adults do not know what one is.
It can be set up in less than an hour and registered properly with the relevant government department in eight to ten weeks. LPAs can help everyone plan for the future, whatever it holds.
